Does DDR or DDR2 memory need to be installed in pairs?
That depends on whether your system has a dual-channel platform. Systems that accept DDR memory might or might not be dual-channel; if the system is NOT dual-channel, then no, you do NOT have to install the memory in pairs.
But if you have a newer DDR system or any DDR2 system, to take advantage of the performance gains it offers you need to install memory in pairs. (For example, if you want to add a 512MB upgrade, you need to install two 256MB modules.) Be very careful to order two modules with the exact-same specifications; the modules must be identical to each other in order to perform correctly. (We recommend buying a pair of modules in a kit.)
However, just because you have a dual-channel platform, you can still install a single memory module; it just won't be utilizing dual-channel mode.
