†1 GB = 1 billion bytes. Actual usable capacity may vary.

Micron® Quality - As a brand of Micron, one of the largest NAND manufacturers in the world, Crucial SSDs are designed and developed in-house with the latest technology. This means four things: hundreds of SSD qualification tests, over a thousand hours of prerelease validation testing, 1.5 billion dollars invested in R&D, and more than 30 years of industry expertise.

Adaptive Thermal Protection - Greater thermal management enables the Crucial M500 to work with the host computer to dynamically adjust power consumption based on usage demands, which helps address the cooling challenges of ultra-small, thermally constrained systems.

Hardware Data Encryption - The Crucial M500 SSD offers top-level hardware-based encryption, enabling enhanced data security. Our AES 256-bit hardware encryption engine and TCG Opal 2.0 compliant firmware allow the drive to operate at full speed without the performance loss that’s typically found in drives that use software-based encryption technology.

Three Year Limited Warranty - From prerelease validation testing to ensure that our SSDs work with the broadest range of chipsets, motherboards, and operating systems to more than a thousand hours of endurance testing, our drives are tested for reliability from start to finish. We proudly offer a three-year limited warranty and award-winning tech support.

Using this in a Mid 2010 MBP running OSX 10.8.3 and it works perfectly.

There are two issues (which is the main reason for writing this review).

Time machine disks include a recovery partition which can be used to reinstall the OS and restore your system (this is what I used to do the transfer).

All you need to do is get your timemachine backup current, swap out the system drive, and boot your laptop. If the backup disk is connected it'll auto boot into the OSX installer with an option to restore from backup.

This SSD comes completely unformatted, with no filing system. This causes the installer to hang on the step where it's detecting destination disks. To fix this, before choosing to restore your system, go into disk utility (included as a utility in the installer) and format the new SSD as HFS+, the installer will then detect it as a valid destination disk.

The second issue is that although this disk supports TRIM, OSX will not enable it automatically. Following tutorials using terminal didn't work for me, but this brilliant utility did:
      http://www.groths.org/trim-enabler/

Other than that this drive works perfectly.

My friend just purchased an identical drive for his 2012 MBP running 10.8.3 and it works fine too.

The above problems are not issues with the drive but with OSX, so the drive still gets 5 stars.

Had the SSD for four months, one day my laptop running Windows 7 froze. I tried CTRK-ALT-DEL, waiting, nothing, unresponsive. So I forced the laptop to shutdown with the power button...it would not boot back up after that. My laptop did not recognize the drive at all, it just sat at the BIOS boot screen for several minutes. Used Active Data Studio to try and recover files, the drive would not show up at all. Attempted power cycle procedure several times the next time, no change.

I contacted crucial and they had no recommendations outside of what I already tried and were ready to process the return, but I went a step further. I send my drive to Drive Savers to attempt a recovery estimated at between $700-$2,700! They stated it would be the higher end if successful at all, then I got a call back the next week stating it was completely gone. Called Crucial again (9/8/2014) today to talk about Warranty return and expressed my deep heartbreak over a drive that only lasted for 4 months and the fact that I had lost photos/videos of my newborn that I could not get back. They were unwilling to offer anything outside of the warranty replacement. I expressed frustration also in the fact that there are NO DISCLAIMERS about how sensitive SSDs are to power surges/outages. I said that was unacceptable and the technician was apologetic, but again unwilling to offer any compensation or otherwise for my loss, which in the end was my fault anyway. My only hope now, is that they will not send me a refurbished drive instead of a new one, which is what I paid for, and that this one will work better than the last.

I basically ended the call saying that I unfortunately cannot quickly recommend Crucial drives to anyone without giving fair warning that Crucial itself does not provide.

I used this is an internal bay in my late 2009 Mac Pro (2.66 Quad Core Xeon). Used Carbon Copy to clone the original disk overnight, then just switched boot volumes in the morning and wow, I couldn't be more impressed. Boot and application launch is faster even than I anticipated and very noticeable, especially on things like iphoto. No app takes more than one bounce of the icon then it's ready to go. Been using it all day so far and no problems at all with Mavericks 10.9.2.

The 480 GB isn't a full 512 GB SSD. But it is close to the 512 GB HD that it replaced. I still had plenty of space for adding more data. I paid about $279 for it. Several other makers were more expensive. The overall performance gain was immediately noticeable. The Mac laptop fully booted in about 10 seconds. Shutdown time was about 3 seconds. The SSD performance was combined with a 8 GB RAM upgrade too.

As a side note: My laptop has traditionally been so warm during operation; that LAPTOP was an oxymoron. After installing the Crucial SSD (and memory, also) I thought the cooling fan had failed. After blocking the air intake vent, the fan finally started after about 10 minutes or so.
I find it difficult to comprehend that it is running so much cooler after ditching the 7200rpm standard HDD.

A lot of the competing products have reported problems with AMD motherboards so I was delighted to find that Crucial guaranteed compatibility with my specific board. It's so fast it's shocking. My system boots in 7 seconds. Games load much faster. I will never buy another HDD.

My MacBook used to take 1:30 to startup and load my user profile. It now only takes 30 seconds for both. Using programs like Pro Tools, Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro and Avid. media Composer is easier for me now.

I trust all my valuable footage on this solid state drive.

I'm reasonably knowledgeable PC's and Mac's, but I'd never previously taken a Mac apart. The Crucial Support pages led me to a couple of videos which allowed me to set-up, test and subsequently install the new drive. I was done in about an hour. Very straight forward. Thanks Crucial!
