I was a bit skeptical about installing 16 gigs of RAM in a late 2011 MacBook Pro that Apple says has a maximum capacity of 8, but since Crucial guaranteed it would work, and I read another user review saying it worked on his MacBook (from April 2011), I decided to give it a try.

First of all, it works great. But I failed to seat the first DDR RAM properly, and after putting the back on my computer and booting up, I discovered my computer only recognized 8 gigs of RAM (it came with 4). I decided to use it for a few minutes with 8 to see how much difference it made. 8 megs made a HUGE difference. So I was very curious to see how much the extra chip would make.

This is not a scientific report. I'm not a geek, but I do use several memory intensive programs - Acrobat Pro, Photoshop, iTunes, Adobe Illustrator, Outlook, and random other programs plus web browsing... sometimes all at once while backing up wirelessly.

The extra RAM made a slight noticeable difference, but not nearly the difference I noticed in the 1st 8 gigs.

I was disappointed that the RAM came with no instructions. I didn't quickly find instructions on the Crucial.com site either, but I Googled a YouTube video quickly that was very helpful, and the procedure was very simple.

I'm glad I went ahead and got 16 gigs, even though many people posted that it is overkill. I think not. I like being able to swap quickly and easily between memory-intensive programs, and this has made a huge difference. Since the price is coming down, I went ahead and got another 16 for my wife's computer. She probably could get by with 8, but why take chances at this price?

After installing the 16 gigs of ram into my Mac, I saw immediate performance improvements in all aspects of computer. After the first two months, I was still very excited about seeing that free memory (10 gigs) in my toolbar. It was pretty cool stuff.

    Then the happiness stopped.

First my machine would randomly reboot. For no reason, just randomly turn off and turn back on every five or six days.

Then, it started happening more frequently. Every day, I would have a situation that it would do this.

Lastly, it happened five times in about a three hour period, the last one destroying my hard drive structure, and I had to install everything from a backup.

    Good times.

I will bump this up stars later today after I talk with Crucial and see if they are going to replace the ram outside of their 30 return policy. Otherwise, I cannot see giving a better review than this.

Comments about Crucial 16GB Kit (2 x 8GB) DDR3L-1333 SODIMM Memory for Mac:

My wife's 20111 MacBook Pro was sluggish to say the least. Decided to upgrade RAM and see if this would make a big difference. Answer - yup! The startup of the computer is still lackadaisical, but once she's cooking, I can run several programs at once without any issues. *Note - using the Activity Monitor app, I noticed that even with Google Chrome and a few other basic programs, I was using nearly 7GB of RAM. Before, the laptop only has 4GB. You can see the issue here. Invest, and you'll be extremely happy with the results.

Turned my 2011 iMac into a new computer!

Comments about Crucial 16GB Kit (2 x 8GB) DDR3L-1333 SODIMM Memory for Mac:

I knew memory was a problem. I was consistently using 3.4G of 4G originally installed in the computer. I added 2x8G for a total of 20G which I though might be overkill, but I was also thinking of the future. To my surprise after the first reboot, the computer (in a similar state) consumed 8G of RAM! No wonder my computer was so constipated always hitting the disk for spare memory. What surprised me was the delta in usage. Seriously, this computer acts now that it's like new with the latest OSX. What a great way to dust up an old computer and breath new life into it.

After the installation of OS X High Sierra, the system got somewhat slower and the number of applications opened at one time had to be reduced. Installed the new RAM in the 2 remaining slots, giving the computer a total of 20 Gigs of RAM. Started the system and checked it out for performance and speed. What an improvement!

I purchased the 16G kit for my late 2011 MacBook Pro to replace the 2x4G. The installation was very easy and took approximately 20 minutes, although it could have been done in 10 minutes. Removing and replacing the case screws was the most time consuming aspect.

Once started up, the homescreen appeared very quickly (no spinning rainbow wheels) and it has run flawlessly now for about a month. Previous to the installation, this was used as a second machine to a much newer MacBook Pro. It was becoming slower and slower - unable to keep up with all the iOS upgrades. For this reason, I used it very infrequently. Now, however, the unit has a new lease on life and is performing outstandingly and I use it often. I don't know why I waited so long to do this.
