    DDR3 240-pin DIMM

Crucial 240-pin DIMMs are used in DDR3 memory for desktop computers. DDR3 is the latest generation of memory with an improved architecture that allows it to transmit data more quickly.

A dual inline memory module (DIMM) consists of a number of memory components (usually black) that are attached to a printed circuit board (usually green). The gold pins on the bottom of the DIMM provide a connection between the module and a socket on a larger printed circuit board. The pins on the front and back of a DIMM are not connected to each other.

Each 240-pin DIMM provides a 64-bit data path (72-bit for ECC or registered or Fully Buffered modules). (The Ballistix™ and Ballistix Tracer™ high-performance memory do not come in 72-bit or registered modules.)

To use DDR3 memory, your system motherboard must have 240-pin DIMM slots and a DDR3-enabled chipset. This is because a DDR3 SDRAM DIMM will not fit into a standard DDR2 DIMM socket or a DDR DIMM socket.

The number of black components on a 240-pin DIMM can vary, but it always has 120 pins on the front and 120 pins on the back, for a total of 240. 240-pin DIMMs are approximately 5.25 inches long and 1.18 inches high, though the heights can vary. While 240-pin DDR3 DIMMS, 240-pin DDR2 DIMMs, 184-pin DDR DIMMs, and 168-pin DIMMs are approximately the same size, 240-pin DIMMs and 184-pin DIMMs have only one notch within the row of pins.

I spent a fair amount of time researching a RAM upgrade for my machine and really only found one solution that seemed to provide an accurate system scan tool and appropriate suggestions for hardware upgrade. The prices for the upgrade were also some of the lowest prices that could be found. Shipment was faster then quoted and my machine was upgraded faster then the time I tool trying to figure out what I needed and how to get it from other parts providers. Excellent!

When I installed the 8GB DIMMs in my XPS-8700, my PC would not boot. The PS fan, the CPU fan and the DVD deck would start and run for approximately a second, stop, then start again, constantly looping, no output to monitor. I put the old 4GB DIMMs back in and everything works fine. I'm disappointed.

Comments about Crucial 8GB DDR3-1866 UDIMM:

Once again, Crucial makes finding the right memory painless. Plugged the 8 gb x 2 memory into my Dell T3600 and replaced 2 gb x 4. Computer functions much quicker and I can get more use out of this older machine.

      Service and delivery comments:

I made a mistake in buying CL memory, but, not really able to know the difference in speed, I went ahead with it anyway. Somehow, the speed qualification escaped my gaze when ordering.

Great item, but be aware of OS limitations!

Comments about Crucial 8GB DDR3-1866 UDIMM:

Original operating system was Windows 7. Crucial analysis tool indicated upgrade to 32 Gb was possible. However, I could only use 16 Gb due to Windows 7 Home edition limitation. I upgraded to Windows 10 and now have all 32 Gb. It would be good to point to Microsoft OS limitations in regard to available & usable memory. Almost all of my software functioned correctly after OS upgrade.

This product is exactly how it was described online. It was cheap, easy to install, and overall a great experience in DIY computer improvement. The only drawback might be that the memory was delivered in a padded envelope instead of a box. The envelope could potentially be smashed or folded, but mine was not damaged.
