    • Q:

      what does CL=5 / CL=6 mean?
Asked on 10/9/2011 by infoman from washington

        A:

CL refers to the Cas Latency of a module and tells us how many clock cycles pass between data being transferred. The higher the CL the more clock cycles pass. This feature is not as important as the amount of RAM installed and the speed of the RAM.

is there support for Serial Presence Detect (SPD)

        A:

Serial Presence Detect (SPD) is a memory hardware feature that makes it possible for the computer to know what memory is present, and what timings to use to access the memory.

In order for a memory module to support SPD, the JEDEC standards require certain parameters to be placed in the lower 128 bytes of an EEPROM located on the memory module (the SPD chip). These bytes contain timing parameters, manufacturer, serial number and other useful information about the module.
The BIOS uses this information to determine what speed and timings to run the memory at. It is also possible to enter the BIOS and manually improve these speeds and timings, this is called overclocking.
As the memory modules may not support tighter timings, overclocking can lead to crashes and system failure. It can also reduce the lifetime of the modules as they often run at higher voltages and therefore higher temperatures than they were designed for.

my emachine EL1300G-01W has only one slot for RAM. If I buy this 4GB kit will I pull out the 2gb card and put in this new card?

        A:

This system should have 2 memory slots according to our records. If however you only have one slot then you would need to purchase a single 2GB module instead of a kit as this comprises of two modules.

Hi my board supports both pc2-6400 and pc2-5300 , what is the difference between the 2 ? speed ? reliability ? overclocking ? I havent been keeping up with all the newer technology , and doubt I would overclock anyways . I do want the highest speed and reliability and any help would be appreciated , thanks .

        A:

The difference is in the frequency. PC2-6400 runs at 800MHz and PC2-5300 runs at 667MHz. Both speeds are compatible with your motherboard.

        A:

No, unfortunately not. Your computer uses RDRAM, also known as Rambus(R) memory, on 184-pin RIMMs. Unfortunately, Crucial does not carry RDRAM. For further information on Rambus(R) RDRAM, please visit our FAQs at http://www.crucial.com/kb/answer.aspx?qid=3531

If I want to replace a defective memory card and upgrade should I buy 2 of these sets so I'm replacing all 4 cards at once? For the price that seems to be the way to go.

        A:

For best performance, you do want to install in matched pairs. If you are wanting to max the system memory, and run at best performance for your RAM, installing two of these kits would be the best way to go.
