A dual inline memory module (DIMM) consists of a number of memory components (usually black) that are attached to a printed circuit board (usually green). The gold pins on the bottom of the DIMM provide a connection between the module and a socket on a larger printed circuit board. The pins on the front and back of a DIMM are not connected to each other.
240-pin DIMMs are used to provide DDR2 SDRAM memory for desktop computers. DDR2 is a leading-edge generation of memory with an improved architecture that allows it to transmit data very fast.
Each 240-pin DIMM provides a 64-bit data path (72-bit for ECC or registered or Fully Buffered modules). (The Ballistix™ and Ballistix Tracer™ high-performance memory do not come in 72-bit or registered modules.)
To use DDR2 memory, your system motherboard must have 240-pin DIMM slots and a DDR2-enabled chipset. A DDR2 SDRAM DIMM will not fit into a standard SDRAM DIMM socket or a DDR DIMM socket.
The number of black components on a 240-pin DIMM can vary, but it always has 120 pins on the front and 120 pins on the back, for a total of 240. 240-pin DIMMs are approximately 5.25 inches long and 1.18 inches high, though the heights can vary. While 240-pin DDR2 DIMMs, 184-pin DDR DIMMs, and 168-pin DIMMs are approximately the same size, 240-pin DIMMs and 184-pin DIMMs have only one notch within the row of pins. The notch in a 240-pin DDR2 DIMM is closer toward the center of the module.

Q:is it better to use 4 1GB cards or 2 2GB cards if I want 4GB of working memory on my Dell dimension e520?
A:Either would be fine but I would recommend to go for the 4GB kit. Your system can take a maximum of 8GB over the 4 slots so adding 4GB just now would leave you scope to upgrade to 8GB in the future. Your system will still run with Dual Channel with the 4GB kit installed.
A:my E520 has 4 matched dimm slots that you can use for adding memory...it would be limited by the system installed...common is XP which is 32 bit I think and can only use up to 4gb..with win 7 it will go up to 64 bit and 8gb. This is all hearsay of course but my sys is win XP 32 bit and I installed 4 2gb dimms for ttl of 8gb..the sys is currently only utillizing 4gb...I intend to install Vista/win 7 shortly so to take advantage of the full memory upgrade. reccommend 2 2gb dimms as opposed to 1 4gb.
Q:can I divide the 4 GBs in this kit and just use 2Gbs in two different pcs of the same make and model?

A:This will depend on how much memory you currently have installed. If you have a 32-bit version of Windows then it wouldn't be worth while installing over 4GB as this can only use up to 3.5GB of RAM in total. To install more you would require a 64-bit version of the Operating System.

A:RAM is not a storage device. It works only when the system is switched on and its job is to increase speed and performance. Data, files, operating system etc are stored on the hard drive. You will not lose anything by upgrading the memory.
Q:I HAVE A DELL XPS600 RUNNING XP PRO USING 32 BITS. I WANT TO UPGRADE. ACCORDING TO DELLS MANUAL IT STATES THAT THE MAXIMUM MEMORY USING 32 BITS IS 2GB HOWEVER THEIR SITE AND ALSO YOURS STATES THAT THIS 4GB MEMORY IS COMPATABLE. THE QUESTION IS, CAN I BY USING 32 BIT BE ABLE TO OBTAIN THE 4GB IF I UPGRADE WITH THESE BOARDS?
A:The system can hold up to 4GB of RAM, but your operating system will not recognize the full 4GB of RAM. Many times a 32bit OS will only recognize somewhere between 3GB and 3.5GB of RAM.
