200-pin SODIMM

 DDR2 200-pin SODIMM" width=
DDR2 200-pin SODIMM: Approximately 2.625 in. by 1.18 in. (66.7 mm by 30 mm)

A small outline dual inline memory module (SODIMM) consists of a number of memory components (usually black) that are attached to a printed circuit board (usually green). SODIMMs get their name because they are smaller and thinner than regular DIMMs. The gold pins on the bottom of the SODIMM provide a connection between the module and a socket on a larger printed circuit board. The pins on the front and back of a SODIMM are not connected.

200-pin SODIMMs are used to provide DDR and DDR2 SDRAM memory for notebook computers. 200-pin SODIMMs are available in PC2700 DDR SDRAM, PC3200 DDR SDRAM, DDR2 PC2-6400 SDRAM, DDR2 PC2-5300 SDRAM, DDR2 PC2-4200 SDRAM and DDR2 PC2-3200 SDRAM. To use DDR or DDR2 memory, your system motherboard must have 200-pin SODIMM slots and a DDR- or DDR2-enabled chipset. A DDR or DDR2 SODIMM will not fit into a standard SDRAM SODIMM socket. (Information about which memory technology your system uses is included in the Crucial Memory Advisor™ tool.)

The number of black components on a 200-pin SODIMM can vary, but it always has 100 pins on the front and 100 pins on the back, for a total of 200. 200-pin SODIMMs are approximately 2.625 inches long and 1.25 inches high, though the heights can vary. Like 144-pin SODIMMs, 200-pin SODIMMs have one small notch within the row of pins; however, the notch on the 200-pin SODIMMs is closer to the left side of the module.

This memory upgrade was problem free; easy. It took just one or two minutes to complete the installation. The customer service was excellent; [...] I will buy from them again and I already recommended them to a relative who will procure 4GB from them soon. The improvement of performance is great just going from 3GB to 4GB. I am considering adding a 4GB memory chip stick; but so far my Zino HD (Dell 400) works fast and fine for my multiple program uses. I use Kubuntu (debian based) and Microsoft Windows 7. I some times run Xubuntu which is really fast with this chip set. The installation involves unscrewing two phillips screws underneath the Zino. The cover comes off with the two chips staggered one over the other. I did not need to remove the top chip to lift up and out the bottom chip (new one.) I surf the web, buy stuff online, use emacs, write and read email; but I don't do any gaming. I watched youtube and hulu or it is hula? Both worked great on my Zino. I have an AMD Athlon 3250e processor, ATI Radeon HD 3200 Video Card, 250 GB Hard Drive. I'm delighted with this chip set.

Wanted to upgrade my girlfriend's Toshiba A215-S5837 and went with Crucial - I always do and they've never let me down.

I used the compatibility tool to choose and went with two of these. Old memory was 5300 speed, these are 6400 - but they were supposed to be compatible.

Computer wouldn't boot, no error message - nothing. Put the old memory back in and back to normal. Tried one module at a time, thinking one was possibly bad, no change.

Emailed support and made a few calls (support staff is excellent!) and tried everything they suggested, including BIOS update - no help.

Finally they suggested this test - one old module (known to work) in the A slot and a new module in the B slot. This would force the B slot to run at 5300 as long as it was good (odds of two bad sticks shipping is tiny.)

Jackpot! Booted with no problem and recognized the total 3gb installed when tried with both new modules - indicating the problem is a BIOS / motherboard intolerance for the faster speed.

So they are now going to exchange these two for two 5300 sticks, and I am sure all will be well.

P.S. - they were kind enough to extend the time limit on the exchange despite the fact my girlfriend took the laptop on vacation for two weeks because the site said it was compatible and I had contacted them with the issue. Crucial's support and customer service is #1!

So if you own this machine, be aware the newer faster modules may not work.

I remain a loyal Crucial customer!

    Comments about Crucial 2GB 200-pin SODIMM DDR2 PC2-6400:

I have an 8-year-old Lenovo T61 that came with 2GB, (2x1GB), of RAM. I purchased a Crucial 2x2GB kit with the intention of doubling the T61's RAM.

I didn't realize until after I had installed the RAM that on the 32-bit version of Windows XP, the gain from a RAM improvement might not be fully realized. The T61's BIOS regognized the newly-installed 4GB of RAM, but WinXP-32 only "sees" 2.99GB. If this was advised in the item description, I didn't see it. This would have been nice to know at the time of purchase, both to avoid both the disappointment and an unnecessary troubleshooting session.

But Crucial's Tech Support was first rate. The people were knowledgeable and, quite refreshingly, there were no language barriers. This was a major plus!

Though I didn't get the full gain of the RAM improvement, the computer is somewhat faster and at that, the expenditure was still worthwhile.

I often have multiple open applications and windows. My old Dell Inspiron 1520 with 2GB RAM would almost grind to a standstill. Replaced with 4GB (maximum for a 32-bit Windows 7 system) and a new SSD drive. The computer is now blazing fast and no longer chokes while I work. I like this old (~7 years) Dell -- heavy as a brick, but otherwise a quiet, solid laptop that I use primarily at home.
