This motherboard only supports 4 banks of unbuffered DDR memory and 8 banks of registered DDR memory. Currently, Crucial 256 and 512MB DDR parts are double banked.The easiest way to identify the number of banks a module has is by counting the number of chips on the DIMM. Typically, DIMMs with 8 or 9 chips are single banked and those with 16 or 18 chips will be double banked.

How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS. More information about OS memory maximums can be found here.
