Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.

How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS. More information about OS memory maximums can be found here.

Memory or DRAM is the "working" memory of the computer. It's used to store data for programs (sequences of instructions) on a temporary basis.

Comments about Crucial 4GB kit (2GBx2) Upgrade for a Dell OptiPlex 745 Series (Desktop Mini-Tower and Small Form Factor) System:

I expected this memory to not work correctly with my Dell Optiplex computer. I have previously bought extra RAM for my Optiplex and this has always failed to be reliable (I believe the problem to be a memory timing issue).

Anyway, I ran the Crucial memory finding software on this problematic computer and it identified the correct type of memory for the computer. At first I was sceptical, but now I have 8GB of RAM in my machine that works reliably in Windows 7 and Fedora/Linux without any zombie processes, segmentation faults or general on-the-fly memory corruption. I am very happy considering this upgrade was from 1GB to 8GB. I shall not run out of memory again.

I am totally untechnical, but it took me about 5 minutes to swap out my previous memory and now my kids don't moan about how slow the family PC is. Peace at last.

Being able to run multiple applications (MS Office, Photoshop, VLC etc) without it freezing means that for the money paid, I've practically got a new PC for a very cheap price.

Windows XP will only display 3Gb of memory even if you have more physically installed. Vista extends this to 4GB, but if you want to use anything above this you'll need a 64-bit operating system.

Although the 4gb memory installed, it only increased the ram to 2.99gb. Can this be increased to 4gb.
