Rambus® memory is now available at Crucial!

What you need to know about upgrading your Rambus system ...

Crucial strives to provide our customers with a full complement of memory solutions, and we're happy to announce that we are now able to fulfill our customers' requests for Rambus memory upgrades!

What is Rambus memory?
Rambus dynamic random access memory (RDRAM) is a kind of memory that first emerged in the PC market in 1999 as an alternative to SDRAM (synchronous dynamic random access memory). Even though it is a type of dynamic random access memory (DRAM), beyond that point, RDRAM is a different memory design than SDRAM.

Does my system use Rambus memory?
Dell® and Gateway® sold Rambus-based PCs for a few years starting in 1999 and in fact are some of the most common users of Rambus, but you should use the Crucial Memory Advisor™ or System Scanner tools to determine whether your system uses RIMMs (Rambus dual inline memory modules).

Do I HAVE to use Rambus memory?
Generally speaking, a computer is built to support one type of memory, so systems that take RDRAM cannot take any other types of memory, such as SDR SDRAM, DDR SDRAM, or DDR2 SDRAM. If you try to install multiple types of memory, the modules will not function and will not even fit into the slots.

What RIMMs does Crucial carry?
Crucial's Rambus offerings include the following speeds and densities:

256MB512MB
866MHz X X
1066MHz X

Tips for installing Rambus memory upgrades:
Here are a few things you should know about installing RIMMs:

  • Rambus memory is installed in pairs.
  • All the slots in a Rambus-based motherboard must be filled, either with a RIMM or with a CRIMM (continuity RIMM) placeholder.
  • The pair of modules in the upgrade should replace either a pair of CRIMMs or two existing lower-density RIMMs.
  • WARNING! The design of RDRAM modules causes them to operate at hot temperatures, so be careful not to burn your fingertips if you are removing RIMMs.

Why buy Rambus memory at Crucial?
Crucial is the only memory upgrade supplier that has the expertise of being part of a major memory manufacturer. We've worked closely with PC original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to ensure that the RIMMs we sell will meet your system specifications.

If you're not satisfied with the performance of your Rambus memory in the first 30 days, simply return it for a refund of your purchase price! All Crucial memory, including Crucial's Rambus offerings, meets stringent quality standards and comes complete with our limited lifetime warranty.
