The package arrived white as fresh Colorado snow, spotless, ephemeral in its cleanliness and rectangularity, heralding the arrival of its precious silicon contents and like a spring breeze giving a faint but unmistakable clue of what the future held. Shiny and translucent, the anti-static plastic cradling the circuitry within slid from the bubble-wrap womb that had so dutifully protected it. Trembling with anticipation and fear of static shock damage, I unsheathed the RAM stick. Firmly yet gently I placed the RAM into the slot and pushed, lips pursed and sweat beading on my forehead as trepidation built commensurate with every additional pound of pressure - the board, the Mother board, would it not sustain such pressure? Would it snap, converting this now-ineffable RAM stick into so much dull, useless plastic and cold solder? But then: 'click.' No, I will not die, not today, the Mother board replied to my pressure. The Hard Drive platters rang in anticipation of the joy of no longer being thrashed for even the most pedestrian of tasks. No, I will not die, not today; for today I have been given new life. Thus sprung forth from my Dell Dimension 4400 its song of renewal, trumpeting its return from obsolescence, ever stalwart.

I used the 'Scan My System' feature on Crucial.com's website. Bought the recommended upgrade. It's not correct for my system. By the time I was able to fund a professional's review (when it was confirmed that I had the wrong module for my machine), I was past the 30 days cut-off for refund. I'm not a happy customer.

                      184-pin DIMM

                      184-pin DIMM for DDR memory
Approximately 5.25 in. by 1.25 in. (133.35 mm by 31.75 mm)

A dual inline memory module (DIMM) consists of a number of memory components (usually black) that are attached to a printed circuit board (usually green). The gold pins on the bottom of the DIMM provide a connection between the module and a socket on a larger printed circuit board. The pins on the front and back of a DIMM are not connected to each other.

184-pin DIMMs are used to provide DDR SDRAM memory for desktop computers. Standard 184-pin DIMMs are available in PC1600 DDR SDRAM, PC2100 DDR SDRAM, PC2700 DDR SDRAM, and PC3200 DDR SDRAM.

To use DDR memory, your system motherboard must have 184-pin DIMM slots and a DDR-enabled chipset. A DDR SDRAM DIMM will not fit into a standard SDRAM DIMM socket. (Information about which memory technology your system uses is included in the Crucial Memory Advisor™ tool.)

The number of black components on a 184-pin DIMM can vary, but it always has 92 pins on the front and 92 pins on the back, for a total of 184. 184-pin DIMMs are approximately 5.25 inches long and 1.25 inches high, though the heights can vary. While 184-pin DIMMs and 168-pin DIMMs are approximately the same size, 184-pin DIMMs have only one notch within the row of pins.
