†1 GB = 1 billion bytes. Actual usable capacity may vary.

Micron® Quality - As a brand of Micron, one of the largest NAND manufacturers in the world, Crucial SSDs are designed and developed in-house with the latest technology. This means four things: hundreds of SSD qualification tests, over a thousand hours of prerelease validation testing, 1.5 billion dollars invested in R&D, and more than 30 years of industry expertise.

Adaptive Thermal Protection - Greater thermal management enables the Crucial M500 to work with the host computer to dynamically adjust power consumption based on usage demands, which helps address the cooling challenges of ultra-small, thermally constrained systems.

Hardware Data Encryption - The Crucial M500 SSD offers top-level hardware-based encryption, enabling enhanced data security. Our AES 256-bit hardware encryption engine and TCG Opal 2.0 compliant firmware allow the drive to operate at full speed without the performance loss that's typically found in drives that use software-based encryption technology.

Three Year Limited Warranty - From prerelease validation testing to ensure that our SSDs work with the broadest range of chipsets, motherboards, and operating systems to more than a thousand hours of endurance testing, our drives are tested for reliability from start to finish. We proudly offer a three-year limited warranty and award-winning tech support.

        Superb Ultra Fast Drive

I own and accounting firm in its 36th year and have installed Crucial drives on several of our computers. Just installed this drive today and it is truly exceptional. Ultra fast performance and adds a real "pop" to programs. Would highly recommend it as a primary drive and keep your existing drive for data. It is an unbelievable difference from running standard hard drives and will save an enormous amount of time if used in a working enviornment. Our computers are left on 24 7 and never had one go down yet. Simple to install, but if you are using Quickbooks you will need to contact them for technical assistance in one file that requires deletion -- they can walk you through the adjustment in minutes and you are off and running. Besides the QuickBooks issue all other programs are perfect after cloning. Highly recommended for any serious computer user.

This product was easy to install. I used the USB transfer cable ($19.99, sold separately) and the Acronis disk copy software to clone my hard drive to the SSD. It worked perfectly, even resizing two partitions slightly smaller so they would fit on the new drive. Windows 8 recognized the new drive right away and I had no startup problems. My laptop is now blazingly fast. Boot-up used to take 40 seconds (Windows 8) but now takes about 10. Every action that was hard drive dependent is much faster.

Using this in a Mid 2010 MBP running OSX 10.8.3 and it works perfectly.

There are two issues (which is the main reason for writing this review).

Time machine disks include a recovery partition which can be used to reinstall the OS and restore your system (this is what I used to do the transfer).

All you need to do is get your timemachine backup current, swap out the system drive, and boot your laptop. If the backup disk is connected it'll auto boot into the OSX installer with an option to restore from backup.

This SSD comes completely unformatted, with no filing system. This causes the installer to hang on the step where it's detecting destination disks. To fix this, before choosing to restore your system, go into disk utility (included as a utility in the installer) and format the new SSD as HFS+, the installer will then detect it as a valid destination disk.

The second issue is that although this disk supports TRIM, OSX will not enable it automatically. Following tutorials using terminal didn't work for me, but this brilliant utility did:
                    http://www.groths.org/trim-enabler/

Other than that this drive works perfectly.

My friend just purchased an identical drive for his 2012 MBP running 10.8.3 and it works fine too.

The above problems are not issues with the drive but with OSX, so the drive still gets 5 stars.
