DDR3 240-pin DIMM

240-pin DDR3 DIMM
Approximately 5.25 in. by 1.18 in. (133.35 mm by 30 mm)

Crucial 240-pin DIMMs are used in DDR3 memory for desktop computers. DDR3 is the latest generation of memory with an improved architecture that allows it to transmit data more quickly.

A dual inline memory module (DIMM) consists of a number of memory components (usually black) that are attached to a printed circuit board (usually green). The gold pins on the bottom of the DIMM provide a connection between the module and a socket on a larger printed circuit board. The pins on the front and back of a DIMM are not connected to each other.

Each 240-pin DIMM provides a 64-bit data path (72-bit for ECC or registered or Fully Buffered modules). (The Ballistix™ and Ballistix Tracer™ high-performance memory do not come in 72-bit or registered modules.) Standard DDR3 240-pin DIMMs are currently available in PC3-8500 (DDR3 1066MHz) and PC3-10600 (DDR3 1333MHz) speeds. Additional speeds will be added as the technology becomes available.

To use DDR3 memory, your system motherboard must have 240-pin DIMM slots and a DDR3-enabled chipset. This is because a DDR3 SDRAM DIMM will not fit into a standard DDR2 DIMM socket or a DDR DIMM socket.

The number of black components on a 240-pin DIMM can vary, but it always has 120 pins on the front and 120 pins on the back, for a total of 240. 240-pin DIMMs are approximately 5.25 inches long and 1.18 inches high, though the heights can vary. While 240-pin DDR3 DIMMS, 240-pin DDR2 DIMMs, 184-pin DDR DIMMs, and 168-pin DIMMs are approximately the same size, 240-pin DIMMs and 184-pin DIMMs have only one notch within the row of pins.

I have a motherboard that has some major compatibility problems with memory from various vendors. I tried memory from two other popular vendors, but neither would work reliably with this motherboard. Yet the motherboard vendor refused to help me because when I shipped them the board, they insisted that they could not reproduce the problems I was seeing. In the end, after having wasted time and money on incompatible memory, I decided to buy from Crucial. The Crucial memory worked perfectly and error-free from the moment they were installed. I wish I had been smart and bought Crucial memory in the first place!

Been using Crucial for years in many machines. However, my sticks do not appear to be compatible with my GA-770TA-UD3 board at 1333 MHz. System crashes on Prime95. Workaround is to run the memory at 1066 which is unconditionally stable. Recommendation: Gigabyte needs to update BIOS or provide compatible settings. Just FYI.

Got them fast, they installed easily and without issues, and they just worked. My problems with speed and response are gone.

I fondly (!) remember installing a 512K (I think) RAM card back in the day. Took me hours of dip switch flipping, testing, and cursing to get the bloody thing to function. Progress (in this case) is very, very good.

After custom built computer was checked and checked again due to increasing occurances of BSOD and after new graphics card and total re-install of Windows 7 didn't solve the problem...I bought and installed new memory which corrected the problem....should have done this first and saved $ and time.

windows 32bit oses have a 4gig memory limit paging can offset this at a performance cost.
by using the full 4gi memory as opposed to 2gig there is a performance increase however a portion of that 4gig is not usable due to operating system and intel processor limitations.
so i decided to pair 2gig ram modules to make 4gig of ram and the results are noticibly better.
