When I assembled my computer 3 years ago I chose a pair of Crucial 512MB DIMMs for RAM memory, with the intention of upgrading memory at a later date. Recently, I was pleased to find that I could easily add 2 GigaBytes of additional memory for almost the same price as the original 1 GigaByte.I used the tool on the Crucial Website to determine the choices I had for upgrade and the various kits available. This tool interogated my machine and correctly identified the installed memory and then provided options for additions or replacement. The options were displayed clearly along with cost of eash option and relative indication of performance increase.O[...]The Website also provided clear concise instructions regarding the installation procedure. The overall process was easy, and I now have a much faster machine making applications such as photo processing run much faster.

I bought the Crucial memory because I've got a CyberPower computer and Crucial's software told me what to get. I've been plugging memory into PCs since 1981, so I'm familiar with the process. The memory didn't work when I first plugged it in, and the tech guy suggested I try one piece of the matched set, then the other separately while removing my original memory. It finally worked, but now my sound system pops and scratches. Don't know why, and haven't had a chance to diagnose it, but have searched and seen others with similar sound problems.

Web tool said to buy 3x1GB RAM for my PC, but PC wouldn't accept more than 2.5GB RAM: computer would freeze otherwise. Took me three hours to figure out 'cause screen would die after booting.

                    184-pin DIMM

                    184-pin DIMM for DDR memory
Approximately 5.25 in. by 1.25 in. (133.35 mm by 31.75 mm)

A dual inline memory module (DIMM) consists of a number of memory components (usually black) that are attached to a printed circuit board (usually green). The gold pins on the bottom of the DIMM provide a connection between the module and a socket on a larger printed circuit board. The pins on the front and back of a DIMM are not connected to each other.

184-pin DIMMs are used to provide DDR SDRAM memory for desktop computers. Standard 184-pin DIMMs are available in PC1600 DDR SDRAM, PC2100 DDR SDRAM, PC2700 DDR SDRAM, and PC3200 DDR SDRAM.

To use DDR memory, your system motherboard must have 184-pin DIMM slots and a DDR-enabled chipset. A DDR SDRAM DIMM will not fit into a standard SDRAM DIMM socket. (Information about which memory technology your system uses is included in the Crucial Memory Advisor™ tool.)

The number of black components on a 184-pin DIMM can vary, but it always has 92 pins on the front and 92 pins on the back, for a total of 184. 184-pin DIMMs are approximately 5.25 inches long and 1.25 inches high, though the heights can vary. While 184-pin DIMMs and 168-pin DIMMs are approximately the same size, 184-pin DIMMs have only one notch within the row of pins.
