Went from 2 gig to 8 gigs on a primary computer that was about 4 years old and running Vista slowly. I spent much of the last year blaming it on Vista - because that is what we all do.. right?

The memory identification software is very slick and useful, and saves opening the case just to find out what memory it can use. The installation information warned me about the fact that often the video card blocks some memory banks and may need to be removed and replaced, so I was prepared for that.

The only "Con" I think of is that I've gotten used to having a great story to tell after most hardware changes. The tales typically involve Internet research, numerous cycles of trial and error, maybe some time talking to a person in the Philippines named "Sam" and winds up with me the hero for getting to the holy grail of a machine that will re-boot.

Never happened. Increasing the memory was the easiest and most cost effective way to get another year or two out of the machine. I was so confident I installed 64 bit Windows 7 and the darned thing boots up 25% faster (3 minutes now versus just over 4 minutes before) and runs multiple graphic windows with ease.

Hoped I could get the recommended 8gb Ram to post but it would not despite following all the suggestions from CS, latest bios, reduce speed, check voltage supply sufficient, use optimal setting but no joy with any. CS responded promptly but finally told me to ask ASUS. Their MB recommendations failed for 8gb Ram - but 4gb would work. System has Phenom II x4 940. Sorry, I can't recommend.

    Comments about Crucial 2GB 240-pin DIMM DDR2 PC2-5300:

2x Crucial.com product CT2KIT25664AA667: 8GB RAM total (as 4x 2GB DIMMs) is fully compatible with the Hewlett Packard Pavilion d4500e desktop mainboard [HP GL8E (Nodus M3), a.k.a. Asus A8M2N-LA]. HP's website notes the d4500e only supports a maximum 4GB RAM (as 4x 1GB DIMMs). The 4GB however is _not_ a RAM ceiling imposed by the Asus A8M2N-LA hardware/firmware, but rather a limitation imposed by the operating system (Microsoft 32-bit Windows Vista) which shipped pre-installed on the HP Pavilion d4500e desktop. The HP Pavilion d4500e desktop recognizes and runs very well with 8GB RAM under a 64-bit operating system such as popular contemporary Linux distributions- which additionally are likely to well-utilize all the computer's resources.

                        240-pin DIMM for DDR2 memory
Approximately 5.25 in. by 1.18 in. (133.35 mm by 30 mm)

A dual inline memory module (DIMM) consists of a number of memory components (usually black) that are attached to a printed circuit board (usually green). The gold pins on the bottom of the DIMM provide a connection between the module and a socket on a larger printed circuit board. The pins on the front and back of a DIMM are not connected to each other.

240-pin DIMMs are used to provide DDR2 SDRAM memory for desktop computers. DDR2 is a leading-edge generation of memory with an improved architecture that allows it to transmit data very fast.

Each 240-pin DIMM provides a 64-bit data path (72-bit for ECC or registered or Fully Buffered modules). (The Ballistix™ and Ballistix Tracer™ high-performance memory do not come in 72-bit or registered modules.)

                        Standard DDR2 240-pin DIMMs are available in DDR2 PC2-3200 SDRAM, DDR2 PC2-4200 SDRAM, DDR2 PC2-5300 SDRAM, and PC2-6400 SDRAM.

To use DDR2 memory, your system motherboard must have 240-pin DIMM slots and a DDR2-enabled chipset. A DDR2 SDRAM DIMM will not fit into a standard SDRAM DIMM socket or a DDR DIMM socket.

The number of black components on a 240-pin DIMM can vary, but it always has 120 pins on the front and 120 pins on the back, for a total of 240. 240-pin DIMMs are approximately 5.25 inches long and 1.18 inches high, though the heights can vary. While 240-pin DDR2 DIMMs, 184-pin DDR DIMMs, and 168-pin DIMMs are approximately the same size, 240-pin DIMMs and 184-pin DIMMs have only one notch within the row of pins. The notch in a 240-pin DDR2 DIMM is closer toward the center of the module.

Ballistix and Ballistix Tracer 240-pin DIMMs

                        Our high-performance Ballistix 240-pin DIMMs come in DDR2 PC2-5300 SDRAM, DDR2 PC2-6400 SDRAM, and DDR2 PC2-8000 SDRAM. The Ballistix Tracer illuminated, activity-indicating high-performance 240-pin DIMM comes in SDRAM, DDR2 PC2-6400 SDRAM, and DDR2 PC2-8000 SDRAM
