Storage:

SATA

Storage Drives -- hard drives and solid state drives -- are the permanent memory for the programs and documents on your computer.

Data Transfer Rate is the rate at which data can be sent or received. This is determined by your motherboard. A drive with a higher transfer rate will only run at the rate of the motherboard's transfer rate.

Cache is a type of working memory that allows the drive to perform faster.

RPM is the rotations per minute of a hard drive which effects the speed of data transfer.

Solid State Drives are non-moving memory, so access speed is instant.

Upgraded a 2nd generation Mac Mini 1.42GHz that had 512 MB of RAM. Not really a speed increase, but now there's breathing room so I can run multiple apps at the same time and not touch the swap file. For OS 10.4.11, I'd say 1GB of ram should be the minimum. The Mini's case is difficult to get off (have to use a putty knife) and I left a few scars on the plastic underside, but nothing visible when it's sitting upright. Other than that, a great upgrade!

Comments about Crucial 1GB Upgrade for a Apple Mac mini (G4 - 1.42GHz) System:

My 1.4 GHz, G4 Mac Mini was getting tired. Stock memory was not enough for the current OS and the machine was running slowly. 1 GB memory upgrade was the perfect, low cost solution to get a few more years use out of this machine.

Crucial makes buying the correct memory incredibly easy. It wasn't worth my time to search for a cheaper vendor. I knew Crucial would send me the correct part.

Mac Mini is a bit of a pain to open up for memory installation, but the results are worth it.

Crucial's look up system takes the guess work out of finding the compatible ram for your PC or MAC. I purchased one for my son's MAC Mini and a few days later my daughter needed memory for her Vista machine. It's incredible how much information Crucial has on all models of every machine. You can shop with confidence with these guys. With so many computers floating around my family I can use all the help I can get. thanks!

Comments about Crucial 1GB Upgrade for a Apple Mac mini (G4 - 1.42GHz) System:

I've been afraid for quite some time to open up the Mac Mini case and do it myself, but actually it was very easy to do with a 1", flexible putty knife. Actually had more trouble putting the case back on flush than removing, but by working back to front with some care was able to do it. Nothing more to do, and the upgrade has made a huge difference.

I needed to upgrade my computer so that I could take advantage of the new multi-media services (such as streaming Netflix) and to be able to synch it with my ipad. Apple no longer made the chip that I needed, so this was a real life saver (and money saver -- buying a whole new computer system wasn't an option for me).
