How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS. More information about OS memory maximums can be found here.

Memory or DRAM is the "working" memory of the computer. It's used to store data for programs (sequences of instructions) on a temporary basis.

Storage Drives -- hard drives and solid state drives -- are the permanent memory for the programs and documents on your computer.

Data Transfer Rate is the rate at which data can be sent or received. This is determined by your motherboard. A drive with a higher transfer rate will only run at the rate of the motherboard's transfer rate.

Cache is a type of working memory that allows the drive to perform faster.

RPM is the rotations per minute of a hard drive which effects the speed of data transfer.

Solid State Drives are non-moving memory, so access speed is instant.

Local "big box" store insisted that I pull the old memory and bring it in or they couldn't guarantee that they had the right part. I didn't want to take laptop out of service.. so went to Crucial website. Looked up correct memory boards--a snap [...]. Took about 5 minutes to install new 2 gig memory boards. Switching PC users used to take 50 seconds. It now takes 7 seconds. And, "big box" wanted 25% more for their comparable memory chips.

Installed the RAM -- the system failed to reboot -- put the old RAM back in -- same thing. Can't figure this out -- did I buy the wrong RAM (used the RAM selection tool so I was pretty sure to get the right thing). Now I'm looking at an expensive diagnostic bill to discover what's wrong. This really sucks!

I have ordered from CRUCIAL some 8-times in the last few years - I do not think there is a better RAM provider in the market. I especially like their memory analysis tool - I always got he right memory at the right price.

This RAM upgrade saved a dying laptop. Performance before upgrading was sluggish and, at times, unacceptable. The laptop now has new life as a productive device.

Playing DVDs in my 1GB laptop was very tedious and frustrating. But, with the addition of this 2GB kit really made the difference. It is now a quick and spunky little machine. Vista is very snappy, too. Best upgrade one can make!!
