Memory:

DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 PC2-6400

Memory Type: DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 PC2-6400, DDR2 (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 4GB
Slots: 4

Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.

How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS. More information about OS memory maximums can be found here.

Memory or DRAM is the "working" memory of the computer. It's used to store data for programs (sequences of instructions) on a temporary basis.

Storage:

SATA

Storage Drives -- hard drives and solid state drives -- are the permanent memory for the programs and documents on your computer.

Data Transfer Rate is the rate at which data can be sent or received. This is determined by your motherboard. A drive with a higher transfer rate will only run at the rate of the motherboard's transfer rate.

Cache is a type of working memory that allows the drive to perform faster.

RPM is the rotations per minute of a hard drive which effects the speed of data transfer.

Solid State Drives are non-moving memory, so access speed is instant.

Graphics Card:

PCI Express x16 Graphics

External Connector: 15-hole connector

Graphics Card A circuit board fitted to a computer containing the necessary video memory and other electronics to provide a bitmap display. Adaptors vary in the resolution (number of pixels) and number of colours they can display, and in the refresh rate they support. These parameters are also limited by the monitor to which the adaptor is connected.

Worked Great on Dell 531S: faster boot!

Comments about Crucial 2GB kit (1GBx2) Upgrade for a Dell Inspiron 531s System:

Went from 2GB to 4GB on a Dell (thin) Inspiron 531S desktop. When booting in Vista it used to take 24 scrolls of the green bar. Now it's only 3 scrolls! The high-speed fan almost never turns on now, instead of everytime as well. Even when I run Stellarium (a memory intensive Astronomy program) the HD and fans don't make noise and the program runs smoothly. Install was easy: you have to flip the clips to open, make sure the slightly off-center notch is aligned (if not flip the chip around) and press sorta hard (kinda scary hard).
            Then just boot up!

I can't believe I wasted time trying to turn off different startup programs and services to shave off 1 second there, 2 seconds here. Just double your memory for cheap. The first couple boots weren't any faster because Vista decided to do a huge set of auto-updates the day I installed, but after that: mega-fast boot up, and programs work smoother.

32-Bit Vista only really can use 3.25G of memory, but when you install this--under Control Panel\System and Maintenance\System it will actually Memory: 4.00GB to show you installed it correctly.

In summary: cheap, fast ship, easy install, way faster boot up, a LOT less hard drive chatter and hi-speed fan noise. It's been a few weeks and everythings still awesome.

Need to run multiple financial programs on a Dell w/Windows. What a difference when I loaded 4Mb of RAM versus 1MB. Programs load instantly with no lag time processing reports, etc.
If your RAM slots aren't max loaded, do it now. Run the Crucial Scan and get it.
