Memory:

DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 PC2-6400

Memory Type: DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 PC2-6400, DDR2 (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 4GB
Slots: 2

Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.

How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS. More information about OS memory maximums can be found here.

Memory or DRAM is the "working" memory of the computer. It's used to store data for programs (sequences of instructions) on a temporary basis.

Storage:

SATA

Storage Drives -- hard drives and solid state drives -- are the permanent memory for the programs and documents on your computer.

Data Transfer Rate is the rate at which data can be sent or received. This is determined by your motherboard. A drive with a higher transfer rate will only run at the rate of the motherboard's transfer rate.

Cache is a type of working memory that allows the drive to perform faster.

RPM is the rotations per minute of a hard drive which effects the speed of data transfer.

Solid State Drives are non-moving memory, so access speed is instant.

Chipset:

AMD M690G chipset

Chipset is a set of integrated circuits that have a specific purpose in a computer system, a group of microchips used together to perform a single task.

Upgraded from 1GB to 4GB to support MS VISTA operating system. Significant increase in performance.
Not being a tech, Crucial's install doc's did not get me to the second memory chip's install. Went to DELL's WEB Site and obtained detailed instructions as to keyboard removal and second chip install. Realize Crucial can not cover all possibilities ... just also point to the manufacture's WEB site if known.

Comments about Crucial 4GB kit (2GBx2) Upgrade for a Dell Inspiron 1721 System:

Computer came with 1gb ram, but machine randomly blue screened. All hardware passed every stress test. Manufacturer finally admitted Vista OS required more ram so I upgraded. Machine is now functioning like new following ram upgrade to 4gb and complete OS reload. I am an extremely happy - repeat customer.

The product is great. Especially for small business folk in the PC repair and upgrade areas. Price and quality are the best things about crucial memory. I found that the PC checker is not as accurate as I thought. I recently purchased some memory for a laptop and the PC checker said the laptop had 2 slots and ended only have 1 slot.
