Memory:

DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 PC2-6400

Memory Type: DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 PC2-6400, DDR2 (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 8GB
Slots: 4

Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.

How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS. More information about OS memory maximums can be found here.

Memory or DRAM is the "working" memory of the computer. It's used to store data for programs (sequences of instructions) on a temporary basis.

Storage:

SATA

Storage Drives -- hard drives and solid state drives -- are the permanent memory for the programs and documents on your computer.

Data Transfer Rate is the rate at which data can be sent or received. This is determined by your motherboard. A drive with a higher transfer rate will only run at the rate of the motherboard's transfer rate.

Cache is a type of working memory that allows the drive to perform faster.

RPM is the rotations per minute of a hard drive which effects the speed of data transfer.

Solid State Drives are non-moving memory, so access speed is instant.

Excellent customer support by Crucial. Vista 64 Bit on Dell E510 does not work, therefore no point in upgrading with two sticks of 2gb each. Max performance is 4 x 1gb sticks at PC2-4200, no speed increase with PC2-5300.

With this amount of DRAM, many large applications fit in memory. That means you can switch between the apps instantly, without waiting for Windows to swap them on and off of the hard drive. This speeds things up significantly.

Note that the memory doesn't come with instructions for installation, but you can get excellent instructions by downloading dimension-5150x_Service Manual_en-us.pdf from the Dell web site.

I was considering getting rid of my Dell Dimension E510. After all it is over 5 years old now... but it worked well, and had a lot of files on it. Soooo I thought if I could increase the memory, perhaps it would make it through another year or two.. I took out the old 1 gb total memory and inserted the two x 2 gb kit I purchased, and now it works great again.. thanks for saving me a grand or two..

Super simple to order the correct RAM. Crucial asks for year model computer & then gives the part number to do the job. Very easy to install even for an uneducated user.

I ordered this about 6 days ago. It arrived today. I installed it without any problems. But I was worried about not being "grounded" and shocking the RAM. I grabbed ahold of an unpainted screw and handled with care and now my Dell Dimension E510 is running beautifully! It took me a whole 5 minuets to install! I've definitely noticed a change but have not tested to see how well it will run large programs like photoshop or Sony Vegas Pro 10.0. My System only recognized 3.62GB but thats fine with me. I am glad it worked out because my Dad refused to by a new computer because he thinks $1500 should last more than 6 years, and i agree with him but i needed my system to run big programs easily. I am very Happy with the product!!
