Memory or DRAM is the "working" memory of the computer. It's used to store data for programs (sequences of instructions) on a temporary basis.

Storage:

SATA

Storage Drives -- hard drives and solid state drives -- are the permanent memory for the programs and documents on your computer.

Data Transfer Rate is the rate at which data can be sent or received. This is determined by your motherboard. A drive with a higher transfer rate will only run at the rate of the motherboard's transfer rate.

Cache is a type of working memory that allows the drive to perform faster.

RPM is the rotations per minute of a hard drive which effects the speed of data transfer.

Solid State Drives are non-moving memory, so access speed is instant.

My MacBook pro had 4 GB of RAM. I do photography and installed the Photo software "Aperture." This software is a real memory hog. After working on one picture, the "color wheel of wait" would start and I could no longer work. So I added two sticks of 8 GB RAM from Crucial to bring by MacBook up to 16 GB, and now I never see the wheel of wait. I run out of steam in my photo work flow long before the new memory does. For a good price, I now have outstanding computer performance.

You really have to read the instructions from both Crucial and from Apple about the installation of new RAM, and make sure you understand the instructions well. (There are also a couple of You Tube videos that take you through the process.) First, I backed up my hard drive to an external disk before beginning the process (just in case). Turn off the computer and unplug it. You will need to use a # 0 Phillips head screwdriver to take off the back cover of the MacBook. (A non-magnetic screwdriver is fine, just don't lose the little screws you take from the back of the computer). Taking the back cover off was the hardest part of the whole process. Once the back is off, touch something metal in the computer to ground yourself (and don;t wear any static producing clothes). Once you take out the old memory, make sure you line up the new memory sticks correctly before snapping them in. Then you just close the computer back and screw it back on. Start the MacBook up and go to "About this Mac" and you will see that you now have 16 GB of RAM. Simple as that!!

The product was easy to find on the website but the delivery experience of this company is poor. I expected better after making a large purchase.

I ordered the product on Wed and paid for the 3 biz day shipping. The product ships on a Thur. and in theory should arrive on a Monday. Turns out it will arrive on Tue or Wed the following week (4-5 business days).

The company will not refund the shipping cost (unlike other reputable online retailers do when their shipping logistics makes a mistake).

Just got a refurbed mid-2012 MBP. I do intense photo processing and 4GB RAM was not going to cut it. I feared the 8GB limit that Apple says this machine has. But when I saw that Crucial had 16GB available I had to try it. I've used Crucial RAM other times in the past. So I felt confident that this would work. And it did. Now I have a screaming MBP with 16GB of lightening fast RAM. It was easy to install and when I fired up the machine and checked in Info there it was, reading all 16GB. Thanks Crucial.
