The difference between 512MB and 2 GB of RAM is amazing under Windows XP. I have a Thinkpad R50e which had become close to unusable thanks to antivirus software, spysweeper, etc - all sorts of programs that just have to load on boot-up. I've also got Fedora Core 9 loaded, and it runs great (after a little tweaking) as well. I figure I can get another few years out of the Thinkpad, so this was money well spent.
