How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS. More information about OS memory maximums can be found here.

Memory or DRAM is the "working" memory of the computer. It's used to store data for programs (sequences of instructions) on a temporary basis.

Comments about Crucial 512MB Upgrade for a HP - Compaq Presario S3000NX Series System:

Memory lookup was easy and matched product to manufacturer's suggested specifications. I loaded my computer to maximum memory allowed. I wish I had done so a few years earlier than I did, but I am happy with the performance I am getting now with four times as much memory.
The unused DIMM bank had very stiff clips and because the were not worn-in, were much more difficult to install than the previously used bank slot.
The installation saves me from having to buy a new computer for at least 2 years, I figure.
I didn't have to move any other parts inside my computer to get to the DIMM bank slots.
Somehow the installation may have caused my speakers to emit a low level hum that wasn't there before, but it may be caused by having a USB connection to close to some other connection. I have to research this problem.
