Storage Drives -- hard drives and solid state drives -- are the permanent memory for the programs and documents on your computer.

Data Transfer Rate is the rate at which data can be sent or received. This is determined by your motherboard. A drive with a higher transfer rate will only run at the rate of the motherboard's transfer rate.

Cache is a type of working memory that allows the drive to perform faster.

RPM is the rotations per minute of a hard drive which effects the speed of data transfer.

Solid State Drives are non-moving memory, so access speed is instant.

[...] worked installed nicely in my dell optiplex 320 (as expected since I ran this thru the crucialscan)I'm fully satisfied with Crucial.Side note: the dell optiplex is running on a pentium 4 3.0 ghz 1mb L2 cache. This CPU is garbage and I really did not see the speed or performance increase as I expected upgrading from 1 gb ram to 2gb ram. I tried running 5 different firefox profiles on the machine and it got really sluggish. I'm trying to figure out if I can upgrade this machine to a pentium d (dual core) but I'm just gonna save up and get a new computer altogher as I don't want to sink anymore $$ into this system.

No installation instructions that made me call Crucial Support. Their recommendation was to get the latest bios, install modules so that the side clips close by themselves. However, somewhere in the process of installation, my ATI Radeon X`1300 video card died, which because of Vista's idiosyncrasies, kept telling me that the video card drivers could not be installed. Luckily, after many hours I reverted back to the video card on the Optiplex 320 motherboard to get the machine to work.

Because this computer is 32 bits, Vista gives a maximum RAM of 3.50 GB, only 87.5 % of the 4 GB installed.

The performance went from 3.2 to 3.1. according to Vista's "System" in Control Panel. Better performance would be realized with a 64 bit computer.

I had tried a couple other memory strips in this computer that didn't work. I used the Crucial configurator and ordered the memory it suggested. It worked great and for a very reasonable price!

I have been using primarily Crucial RAM for many years. In all that time I have never had a stick of Crucial RAM fail, which is more than I can say for some other brands. For the last few years I have gone crucial anytime I needed RAM. I even use it when I am buying RAM for printers. I especially like their RAM finder online.

Comments about Crucial 2GB Upgrade for a Dell OptiPlex 320 System:

The Crucial scan tool indicated I could add 2 gigs of ram to the OEM 1 gig. Doing so caused repeated system crashes. Dell specifies a maximum of 2 gigs and that 1-GB modules are supported. The Crucial scan indicated up to 3.5 were possible and recommended a 2-GB module. I should have read Crucial's discussion group comments before purchasing the new ram. The Optiplex 320 is working with the single 2 gig module, although now I don't know if I would have been better off purchasing a 1 gig board to add to the exiting 1 gig. My advice: don't just rely on the Crucial scan - check the comments and be sure of the computer manufacturer's specs.

My computer started right up and I noticed an improvement in speed and ease of loading new programs immediately. Crucial scanned my computer beforehand and the components fit and worked great. A great price [...] made the experience even better.
