DDR PC2700

One memory socket is located under the keyboard and the other is under a cover on the bottom of the computer.

How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS. More information about OS memory maximums can be found here.

Memory or DRAM is the "working" memory of the computer. It's used to store data for programs (sequences of instructions) on a temporary basis.

Comments about Crucial 1GB Upgrade for a IBM ThinkPad R51 Series (Type 1830) System:

Finding out which RAM I needed was easy, using the online configurator. I put 2 1 gig sticks in my old R51 ThinkPad. They popped in easily and worked fine when the machine booted up. Would've liked to have paid less, but this alternative was the least risky alternative.
