I had one slot with a 1GB module. The second slot was empty.
I replaced the 1GB with the 2GB I purchased and put the other 2GB that I purchased in the empty slot. The computer would not start.
I put the !GB back in the original slot and it worked. I then replaced the 2GB with the other and it still worked. Replacing the 1GB with either of the 2GB caused it to fail. So I ended up with 3GB and one of the 2GB as surplus. I assume that the Apple modules would have worked.

Although Macs typically don't hog the ram the way a Windows system does, it can still make a big difference in performance when doing intensive tasks. I upgraded my Intel iMac from 1GB to 3GB of RAM and noticed a marked increase in speed and responsiveness, although I wouldn't say the machine was slow to begin with. When you compare Crucial's price with other vendors, it's pretty much a no-brainer. And, of course, upgrading the RAM in an iMac is a piece of cake. It takes less than 5 minutes and all you need is a screwdriver. Go for it. You won't regret it.

The RAM works like you'd expect. It was easy to install but that's mainly Apple's doing. I was able to reboot the iMac and fire up a Windows Vista instance in VMware fusion. This brought me to four gigs of RAM which is more than enough to run a few VMs.

More memory is the cheapest way to speed up your computer. I increased the memory in my iMac from 1 GB to 3 GB, so now I can have three times as many things open in various windows before the processor has to start swapping stuff to disk (much slower) to make more room.

Easy to install one screw and two pull tabs. The thing about the Imac is remember to clear all caches , the mac/OSX is hard on memory. Use Onyx from mac , a third party free software , or write your own script or use the mac tools to clear the cache. If you want to maintain performance.
