I have now changed both 256mb for 2x 1 gb. The second did need the laptop to be taken apart but my pc literate friend did this for me without trouble. It now performs the best ever. Thanks

Using my laptop for, mainly, browsing and document writing, I was becoming irriated that it was taking longer and longer to boot or restart from Suspend mode. The 512Mb of RAM, I decided, was a likely culprit.
Without spending the time and effort measuring timings (for which I certainly don't have the inclination) it's difficult to be objective about a RAM increase. Subjectively, the expected improvements in the two areas mentioned above have been very welcome.
It's early days - it's only been installed a month or so - but I wouldn't expect reliability to be a problem. Previous RAM purchases from Crucial have certainly been reliable and some of those have been in operation for several years.

In terms of time saved booting up alone this chip is worth it. Applications run much quicker. Also 10 times cheaper than upgrading my laptop for a similar increase in RAM. Straight forward to install. Don't know why I didn't do this before.

So I was in the usual position of having an old laptop that wasn't pulling its weight, and wondering if I should throw it away and buy a new one. I thought I would investigate adding some extra memory first and am glad I did - the laptop has been brought back to life, quickly, simply and cheaply. Start up time, general performance and the number of applications I can have open are all significantly improved.
