I took the EEE with Linux as a seriously portable, modestly priced electronic data record of my Archaeological Diving and I felt (from other PCs) that "half a gig" would probably give rather slow performance. It was "OK" but I ordered a 2Gb RAM at the same time. The difference is so clear when you re-boot the first time! I will now evaluate XP Pro on the machine.

I found that other operating-systems than the default Xandros on the Asus EEE need a little more memory. Without it the system tries swapping to flash which slows it down noticably. I really like the mainly cardboard packaging which can easily be recycled. The instructions on how to fit the memory really helped although I also looked up some instructions specifically for upgrading the ASUS Eee memory on-line. I now find that I can run a few apps at once with no swap being used at all. Using this extra memory and Mandriva linux, the Eee will even run the flightgear flight-simulator now at a useable speed. Note that some Unix kernels (including Mandriva) are only compiled to make use of 1Gb RAM - with Mandriva it's easy install their laptop-specific kernel and madwifi drivers using synaptic so you can make use of all the 2Gb on this card.
