I used the 'crucial scanner' to work out the configuration of the RAM required. Its recommended an upgrade specific to my Laptop. I installed the memory and noticed immediatly the increase in speed to boot up and faster speeds in all applications.

I only had 512mb in the dell and thought it was ok,upgraded to 2gb and its like a new laptop,at first I was worried about opening it up (been a relative computer novice)but,DO IT NOW,well worth the small cost involved.

It's memory - stick it in and wonder at the mystery of it all and if it made any difference. Ultimately it worked - but if you buy this module and it is to be used with a non compatible laptop it probably won't work - Q.E.D.
