My Dell 3100 started running very slowly before it would not start up and just gave a beep fault code. I discovered it was a memory problem and by removing one of the two 512MB modules got it started up.

I ran a scan from Crucial which identified the options for replacement. I upgraded to 2GB and not only repaired my machine but increased its performance.

Not bad as it is the first time I have looked inside a computer!

Instead of scrapping it (which I was seriously considering), I fitted (easy) the 2Gb kit recommended on Crucial website. Now it starts up in seconds. Fifty quid well spent. I run windows xp and office 2003 mostly.

If your system is slow, run up Task Manager under normal working conditions. If the Total Commit Charge is greater than the Total Physical Memory you need a memory upgrade. Download the Crucial memory scanner tool. This will give you:-

1) The memory that your system has installed.
2) The maximum memory that it can contain.
3) A link to the Crucial website to order the memory.

Upgrade at least to the Total Commit Charge if not the maximum. You may need to discard the currently installed memory. Get matching pairs of new memory if possible.

This may keep an old PC working for another couple of years and delay purchase of a new system.

As I had previously opened the computer to swap memory boards, it was relatively easy to install the new memory boards and I did not have any problems.
The height of the boards was less than the original 256Mb memory boards but that just shows how technology keeps advancing.

Bought this as DELL specify a maximum of 2GB for the Dimension 3100 system. Booting up with XP is still draggy. But once up and running applications fly eg The GIMP, Word etc.

The problem with the system is the CPU. The Celeron lacks Hyperthreading, and relies on a bus speed multiplier for speed. My P4 2.8GHz runs SUSE 11.0 Linux at the same speed as the dual core Celeron 2.6GHz.

On reflection, I could have ditched XP, and bought 4GB RAM. DELL probably specify 2GB max as XP can't register more RAM

My ram upgrade was really simple to install, i was already aware of how to change the ram in my computer but the Crucial instructions make it so that even my Grandad could do it.
